This volume examines the place of human rights in world politics and how they are justified as ethical principles that constrain political authority. Hoover's Reconstructing Human Rights is the one that is most emphatic about the need to understand human rights in terms of "a democratizing ethos of disruption and change" (2016:77). It is also the only book that discusses in detail how a collective political struggle can invoke human rights for the purposes of contesting "the coordinates of sovereign authority and political membership" (2016:148).
