Moses had five words.
His sister was dying and he did not compose anything. El na refa na la. God, please, heal her, please. Five words, the shortest prayer in the Torah, and after three thousand years still the most urgent thing anyone has said to God about someone they love.
SEVEN opens seven ancient Hebrew prayers that most Christians have never been shown. Not the familiar ones. The deep ones.
The priestly blessing, found in 1979 engraved on two tiny silver scrolls in a Jerusalem tomb, written around 600 BCE and still the oldest biblical text ever recovered from the ground. The forty-two words of the Ana B'Koach, whose opening letters are said to spell a Name of God so weighty that the Talmud restricts it to a person who is humble, sober, and slow to anger. The prayer the High Priest spoke on Yom Kippur, once a year, asking not for the transformation of the cosmos but for grain and wine and oil and dew. The prayer the congregation says under the priestly blessing, spoken so quietly that no one hears it except God.
Some of these Jesus prayed. Some came later, out of the same tradition, from people who kept praying after him. This book is clear about which is which, every time, because the real history is more interesting than a tidier version would be.
In Hebrew, sheva, seven, shares a root with shevua: oath, covenant, promise. To invoke seven in the ancient world was to bind yourself. To say: this is complete. This is sealed. This holds.
The book follows that number through seven turning points in Scripture, from Jericho and the Jordan to Beersheba, Egypt, Gilgal and the first Sabbath, and draws from each one a prayer that opens onto a whole dimension of life: protection, healing, rest, covenant, provision, beginning again, and peace.
