Zusammenfassung

Originally published in 1991, this volume contains chapters presented at the 23rd Minnesota Symposium on Child Psychology held in 1988. The theme of this volume is self processes and development. The psychological study of the self has a long history in the field of psychology. It is a study, however, which had been rediscovered in recent years as researchers attempted to grapple with views of the developing child as an active organism who plays an important role in the shaping of his or her own competencies and personality.

The goal of this volume was to assemble a group of scholars with diverse perspectives on the dynamic organizing processes of the self. Today it can be read in its historical context.

Megan R. Gunnar is Regents Professor of Child Development in the Institute of Child Development at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Gunnar's research focuses on stress biology and the role of early adversity in shaping stress, emotion, and cognitive functioning in the developing child. She has published over 150 articles, chapters, and edited volumes in this area.

L. Alan Sroufe is Professor Emeritus of Child Psychology in the Institute of Child Development at the University of Minnesota. Professor Sroufe received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Wisconsin with a clinical internship at the Langley Porter Neuropsychiatric Institute. Dr. Sroufe has been an Associate Editor of Developmental Psychology and Development and Psychopathology. An internationally recognized expert on early attachment relationships, emotional development, and developmental psychopathology, he has published seven books and 150 articles on these and related topics. His awards include the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award from the Society for Research in Child Development, the Bowlby Ainsworth Award for Contributions to Attachment Research, the G. Stanley Hall Award for Distinguished Scientific Contribution to Developmental Psychology (2007) and the Mentor Award (2013) from Division 7 of the American Psychology Association, an Honorary Doctorate Degree from the University of Leiden, and the Distinguished Teaching Award from the College of Education, University of Minnesota.
